September 2006 saw the start of a massive extension of residents’ parking zones across the Marchmont area. Residents in the affected areas now pay £80 per annum for a parking permit (maximum two per household), and they may also purchase visitor permits to allow guests or visiting tradesmen to park at reduced rates near their homes. Other members of the public must purchase tickets from roadside ticket machines.
The new system has made it considerably easier for residents to park near their homes, but there have been concerns that local traders (who can not currently purchase permits) will be driven from the area. These concerns have been raised with the Council by Marchmont and Sciennes Community Council, and it is hoped that the introduction of trade permits will now be speeded up.
