The City of Edinburgh Council recently agreed to place a quota on the number of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in areas like Marchmont. MAGPIE has long argued for the need to ensure that the rich diversity of the community is not destroyed by a growth in HMOs. Among the problems associated with a high concentration of HMOs is antisocial behaviour which causes ordinary families to move out – and without these long-term residents the maintenance of properties can significantly decline. MAGPIE welcomes the Council’s new policy and will be closely monitoring its implementation.
